Really beautiful here in Waldkirchen
Landscape, nature and sports
In Waldkirchen in the Lower Bavarian district of Freyung-Grafenau, you will find yourself immersed in a beautiful natural setting. The small town is located directly at the foot of the Dreisesselberg and thus offers an ideal destination for nature lovers and hikers. How about a trip to the Saußbachklamm, a wild and romantic nature reserve directly south of Waldkirchen, just below our hotel?
In addition to numerous hiking routes, there are also many opportunities for cyclists and mountain bikers to explore the beautiful landscape around Waldkirchen. In total, there are trails in the immediate vicinity of the village with a combined length of 100 kilometers. The Adalbert Stifter Cycle Path, for example, can be started directly at the hotel - on the 20 kilometers to the Czech border, you can ride in a relaxed manner along a former railroad line. Or would you prefer to cycle to the Bavarian Forest National Park? The northern route of the TransBayerwald will take you there directly, but it is quite demanding.
Rest assured: there is something for every fitness level in the Danube-Moldau cycling region with its dense network of bike paths.
Those who like swimming will also get their money's worth in Waldkirchen. The Karoli adventure pool offers numerous attractions on an area of 8,000 square meters, such as a giant slide or a current channel. For other water sports, the Erlauzwieseler See spa park, a little east of Waldkirchen, offers plenty of opportunities.
A town with history
Already in the Middle Ages, more than 1000 years ago, an important trade route led along here - that's why there was probably already a settlement in Waldkirchen two hundred years before it was first mentioned in the 13th century. Today, the town - one of the easternmost in Bavaria, just 20 kilometers from the Czech and Austrian borders - also has a lot to offer culturally. Visit, for example, the Goldener Steig Museum (which deals with the described trade route) and the Emerenz Meier House or the local history museum, which gives an insight into the life and history of the town.
And culinary you get your money's worth here anyway. Not only the delicious regional specialties will convince you to come back to Lower Bavaria again and again: You can also enjoy a Michelin-starred meal at Johanns Restaurant in Waldkirchen.
For other needs, a visit to the Penninger distillery might be in order - complete with tour and tasting. From apricot schnapps to local whiskey to Penninger Blutwurz: Lovers of every flavor will be satisfied here!
Really Amazing Accessible
Waldkirchen is beautifully situated between Passau in the southwest and the Bavarian Forest National Park in the north. By car, you can reach Waldkirchen from Passau (located on the A3) via the B12 in a good half hour, Regensburg is an hour and a half away. Munich airport is a good 170 kilometers away. You can park your car in the parking lots directly at the hotel.
On weekends and holidays, the Ilztalbahn train takes you from Passau to Waldkirchen (and back) three times a day in one hour; regular buses also run all week from Passau to Waldkirchen town center. The train station is about 2 km away from our hotel, the city center about 1 km.
