Exploring Saxony's Capital City
Dresden is famous as a city of art and culture, just for the Semper Opera, the Frauenkirche [Church of Our Lady] and the Zwinger alone. The university city' s baroque and Mediterranean architecture offers countless attractions and art collections from the past and present. Because of its scenic location on the Elbe River, the city is also known as "Florence on the Elbe".
Dresden is also a city of gardens and parks, which contribute to the high leisure and recreational value of the former capital. More than 7 million guests visit the baroque city every year. Popular sight-seeing destinations in the surrounding area are the Elbschlösser [Elbe Castles] with its gardens and parks - the Lingner Schloss [Lingner Castle], Schloss Eckberg [Eckberg Castle], Schloss Albrechtsberg [Albrechtsberg Castle] and the Barockschloss Moritzburg [Moritzburg Baroque Castle]. The Saxon Switzerland , with the bizarre rock formations of the Elbe Sandstone Mountains, lies only a few minutes drive southeast of Dresden, and is a very popular destination for a day trip.
