Really beautiful here in Waldkirchen
A small town with history
Do not be deceived by the fact that Waldkirchen was only elevated to the status of a "town" in 1972 - the market Waldkirchen, the trading point in this place is vouched for at least since the 12th century and probably existed since the turn of the millennium.
Therefore, the town has a lot to offer: The historic old town with its narrow streets and pretty half-timbered houses invites you to stroll. You may notice the "Radabweiser" (wheel deflectors) on the corners of the houses, colorfully painted granite figures that were supposed to protect the buildings from the wheels of passing carts - but here in Waldkirchen they have become history carved in stone.
Also worth seeing in the town are the parish church of St. Peter and Paul and the Goldener Steig Museum, which is dedicated to a trade route that passed right here in the Middle Ages.
In the Emerenz Meier Haus, you can learn all about one of the most important Bavarian folk poets, while the local history museum provides insights into the life and history of the town. Go deeper into cultural history at the "Jagd Land Fluss Museum" in Wolfstein Castle, just 15 kilometers to the north in the beautiful town of Freyung.
An environment with diversity
With its location in the district of Freyung-Grafenau, in the middle of the Lower Bavarian border triangle of Bavaria, the Czech Republic and Austria, Waldkirchen offers its visitors a scenic environment with numerous opportunities for outdoor activities. There are more than 100 kilometers of biking and hiking trails to discover, numerous nature reserves and local recreation areas - from the Waldkirchen-Dorn golf course to Lake Erlauzwiesel with its numerous water sports opportunities.
The Adalbert Stifter Cycle Path, for example, can be started directly from the hotel - and runs for the 20 kilometers to the Czech border in a relaxed manner along a former railroad line. Or you can get deep into the Danube-Moldau cycling region with its dense network of cycle paths.
Just below our hotel you can hike in the deeply cut gorge of the Saußbachklamm - with huge granite boulders defiantly facing rushing water. A wonderful natural spectacle. And in the "Haller-Alm" you can stop (especially with children) relaxed in the middle of the gorge.
Directly in the village, just a few steps from the hotel, the Karoli adventure pool offers numerous attractions on an area of 8,000 square meters, such as a giant slide or a flow channel.
With only a half-hour drive, you are also quickly in the middle of the Bavarian Forest National Park. Here you can enjoy the impressive nature on numerous hiking trails and explore the flora and fauna.
Waldkirchen is also an interesting destination for winter sports enthusiasts. There are several ski resorts in the area, including the Mitterdorf ski center and the Hochficht ski area.
Really amazing reachable
Waldkirchen is beautifully situated between Passau in the southwest and the Bavarian Forest National Park in the north. By car, you can reach Waldkirchen from Passau (located on the A3) via the B12 in a good half hour, Regensburg is an hour and a half away. Munich airport is a good 170 kilometers away. You can park your car in the parking lots directly at the hotel.
On weekends and holidays, the Ilztalbahn train takes you from Passau to Waldkirchen (and back) three times a day in one hour; regular buses also run all week from Passau to Waldkirchen town center. The train station is about 2 km away from our hotel, the city center about 1 km.
